In this hands-on introductory session, I introduce the concept of containers and provide an overview of Docker. Participants can learn important concepts in Docker step-by-step and learn by example by running commands with me. The main session involves using Docker CLI (Command Line Interface) covering all the key concepts such as creating images and managing containers. What is more, this workshop ends with a complete example of getting some amazing work done with ease using Docker.

5. Building a Data Lake using Apache Hadoop: A Proof of Concept (Click here for more info)
Data Lake is a cool new idea, but often one needs more clarity on ‘why’ you may need to build it and ‘how’ you can build it. We want to answer these two questions not only through slides, but also using a Proof of Concept. In this workshop we will demonstrate a Proof-of-Concept of a Data Lake built on top of Apache Hadoop and Pentaho Data Integration, using data from financial markets. Attendees will learn about Open source platforms available for building a Business Data Lake. You will also take away a documented set of steps to replicate the proof of concept on your own.

6. Building Hackable Keyboards with Open Source Hardware and Software (Click here for more info)
Keyboards are our most basic form of interaction with the computer. For long, we have viewed keyboards as little black boxes which somehow enable us to press a button to see the corresponding character on-screen. For a long time now, it has been possible to build keyboards powered by Free / Open Source Software. Using open source firmware inside keyboards enables one to customize keyboard layouts, shortcuts and just about anything else that one might want to customize. This workshop will enable us to adopt a fresh insight into how free software & hardware can impact the development, programming and use of keyboards.

8. Security and DevOps (Click here for more info)
There is A lot of noise around DevOps right now with pundits calling it the next great IT “movement.” DevOps represents the integration of development, IT operations, security, and quality assurance (and some even saying, sales and marketing), under a single automated umbrella. This radical new paradigm has security practitioners asking whether DevOps could kill information security as we know it. This work delves on that critical aspect. Whether the answer is Yes or No or

9. Developing robust & enterprise IoT applications (Click here for more info)
The main objective of the workshop is to make the audience aware of whole range of design factors involved in development. IoT applications have to cover the complete value-chain that has sensors-actuators at one end to cloud based operations and integration with existing enterprise operations. While the internet based segment of the ecosystem is stable and supports open and heterogeneous connectivity, not the Sensors-Gateway-Internet part of the system. In fact, this segment is quite fluid in terms of standardization of communication protocols governing the sensor nodes and networks. This workshop highlights the issues developers must be aware of when building robust enterprise applications besides the detailed design considerations, what’s available today, what’s possible, etc. For example, they will need to be aware when choosing to incorporate a protocol if that is likely to get accepted widely, so that the applications developed do not need to be changed in a short while.

10. Building Embedded and IOT products made easy with 96boards.org (Click here for more info)
The prototyping phase for any embedded or IOT product is quite challenging for developers as they need to explore various SOCs, find platforms to pre-integrate and validate
peripherals and above all develop software using appropriate tools. The process of
converting prototypes to end products is still tedious as it involves meeting time to market,
reducing BOM cost, productizing software.
Linaro a collaborative software engineering organization focused on the ARM architecture is
solving majority of these problems through its unique “96board.org” initiative. 96Boards is
the first open specification to define a platform for the delivery of compatible low-cost, small footprint 32-bit and 64-bit Cortex-A boards from the range of ARM SoC vendors.
Standardized expansion buses for peripheral I/O, display and cameras allow the hardware
ecosystem to develop a range of compatible add-on products that will work on any 96Boards
product over the lifetime of the platform.

Speaker: Khasim Syed Mohammed, Linaro.
