Give participants a practical path from using MariaDB to contributing to it. The workshop will show how MariaDB development and contribution workflows work, use Foundry to make the build-test-iterate cycle approachable, and guide attendees through creating and testing a simple MariaDB plugin/extension.

- Open-source developers, backend and database engineers, DevOps/platform engineers, students and maintainers who want to understand how to contribute to MariaDB or extend the server with their own functionality. No previous MariaDB contribution experience is required
- 1. How MariaDB is built: server architecture, extension points, and what belongs in core vs. a plugin.
- 2. From user to contributor: finding an issue, navigating the source tree, tests, CI, review and contribution workflow.
- 3. Foundry quick start: setting up a development workspace and using a fast build-test-iterate loop.
- 4. Hands-on contribution exercise: make a small change, add or run the relevant tests, and validate it.
- 5. Plugin lab: create a small working MariaDB plugin/extension, build it, install it and test it.
- 6. Taking it further: choosing a real contribution or plugin idea and understanding the path to upstreaming, maintaining and sharing it.

Attendees will leave able to set up a MariaDB development workflow, find their way around the source and test system, understand how a contribution moves from an idea or issue to review, and build/install/test a basic MariaDB plugin. They will also know where to find suitable first contributions and how to continue working with the MariaDB community after the workshop.
BYOD laptop, a GitHub account, Git and a working command-line environment. Basic SQL and programming experience are recommended; no prior MariaDB source-development experience is needed. Docker/Podman is recommended for the local lab where available. A short setup guide will be shared with participants in advance.
